Firehole River Rapids

The location of the scene depicted in this painting is in Yellowstone National Park, where pretty much everything is a spectacular sight to behold. In this particular view, there was a palpable drama with the enormous rock cliffs and raging rapids. Most visitors to this spot will agree that one can enjoy staring into the powerful water for hours. When the light is strong, the colors in the water are more vivid than jewels. To paint this scene, I had to recollect that magical assortment of color, light, and power, rather than copy the mere subject matter.
