Ozymandian Norway Maple
Graphite drawing on heavy paper of a tree on my college campus. This Norway Maple is located near the art studio, and after passing the tree and liminally observing it nearly every day, I embarked on this drawing: an elegy for the wounded, yet persistent maple. Part of the reason why I love this tree is that it is remarkably figurative; human-looking. To me, there is a clear face with a notable expression that speaks to the blurred boundary between human and the "rest" of nature, nature's innate feeling and intelligence, and generally how we relate to the rest of the natural world.
